Thermography, thermal imaging or infrared thermography
The use of thermography is broad; ranging from medical imaging to monitoring conservation and heat loss in buildings to security surveillance. Most of the suppliers who are members of our website use thermography to assist with buildings maintenance.
The main areas thermography is used for in the building industry are to diagnose areas where energy or heat is lost, test the building envelope, find out if there is any excess moisture in a building, to look for flood damage, to assist in the location of electrical problems or diagnostic engineering. Temperature anomalies in a building can be investigated and any areas that are particularly hot or cold can be assessed. Thermography is photography which uses radiated infrared waves that our eyes are not able to see. All structures emit this radiated energy to varying degrees of the infrared spectrum and special cameras can detect this.
It is possible to scan large areas quite quickly and the imaging is non-intrusive, non-destructive and non-contact. Methods used are quick and simple mostly using sensitive and high spatial resolution thermal imaging cameras. The assessment may involve examining both internal and external walls and weather conditions can make quite a difference to the survey results. Often the results will need to be considered alongside environmental factors and technical information.
If a thermographic survey is being undertaken as part of a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) assessment, the thermographer must be qualified to a minimum Level 2 and should have a Level 2 PCN (Personnel Certification in Non-Destructive Testing) Civil Thermography certification from BINDT (the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing). The PCN Scheme is assessed and accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
There are many certification schemes for thermography so please check the supplier you choose has the right ones for what you need. However sometimes a certified supplier is not necessary and at the moment thermography is unregulated so it is very important to check your chosen supplier has the right skills and experience to give you good images (you could ask to see examples and for references) and can use the camera appropriately to obtain the scans you need.
