Smart Home Technology
Products like Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Nest have given birth to instructions such as, “Alexa, dim the lights” or “Hey Google, close the curtains”, and smart technology is beginning to make inroads into more and more households.
As the smart home technology market has grown over the last few years, it has evolved from being a technology which required expensive, dedicated hubs to one which can be easily operated from propriety devices provided by companies such as Amazon and Google, or for that matter, tablets and smartphones, using a standard Wi-Fi router, provided it gives a strong signal throughout the home.
Video doorbells are now commonplace, allowing owners to use their smartphones to remotely view and communicate with whoever is at their door, both from inside the home or from a beach in a sunnier clime.
Almost all electrical and electronic devices in the home can be controlled remotely, typical examples of the most common are;
Lighting - which can be made to dim, change colour, switch on when it detects movement in an area or can be switched on and off at pre-set times.
Temperature Control – once achieved using a wall mounted thermostat and later by thermostatic radiator valves, it can now be regulated by smart technology which looks at the need to heat based on room temperature, historical movement or occupancy of the area and allows the system to be told of periods when no one is at home.
Entertainment – be it audio or visual can be managed remotely. Music can be played or recorded remotely as can TV favourites, volumes can be adjusted and as an added security measure either music or televisions can be switched on or off to a timer or remotely.
Security – is another area which can benefit from the advances in smart home technology. Homes can be constantly monitored by CCTV cameras which can be interrogated remotely. Motion sensors can detect movement in an area, switching on lights and activating a recording facility in the cameras. Smoke detectors which sound an alarm when they detect a fire are only useful if the alarm can be heard. Smart alarms can now be linked to devices such as smartphones and tablets and can therefore be monitored even when no one is at home. As mentioned previously, lighting, music and televisions can be switched on and off to give the impression of someone being at home.
Before placing an order with a provider, you should ensure that your chosen supplier has suitable experience, qualifications and insurance to perform the work.
